Our Philosophy
Age-old well-being from Finland – reimagined for today
Terhen was born out of a passion to preserve the unique Finnish sauna tradition and introduce natural well-being to everyday life globally. By blending centuries of Finnish expertise with modern wellness insights, we bring the timeless benefits of sauna culture to the world, making it an integral part of daily wellness for today’s health-conscious consumers.
The name Terhen comes from the Finnish national epic, the Kalevala, where Terhenneiti, the Maiden of Mist, is the guardian of mist. The word terhen means fog or mist, reflecting a soft, calming atmosphere—just like the serene world of the sauna.

Home of Sauna
The Finnish sauna is a cornerstone of well-being and balance, deeply embedded in Finnish culture. In 2020, Finnish sauna culture was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognizing its importance as a living tradition. The sauna is a space for relaxation, togetherness, and emotional well-being. At Terhen, we bring this sacred tradition to a wider audience, making it a daily ritual for our customers.

Sauna as a Lifestyle
The sauna is not just a place to bathe—it’s a sanctuary for relaxation, community, and well-being. In Finland, the sauna is an essential part of daily life, offering a ritualistic transition from the everyday hustle and bustle to the peace of mind. It’s a space to unwind, clear your mind, and reconnect with yourself. The sauna is inclusive, welcoming everyone and reflecting Finland’s core value of equality. In this space, all are equal, fostering a sense of belonging and connection.
Sauna bathing promotes a balanced lifestyle, with several scientifically proven benefits, including improved sleep, enhanced mental clarity, better cardiovascular health, stress relief, detoxification, muscle recovery, and overall physical and mental wellness.

Sauna Therapy
Sauna therapy is a holistic healing method that combines the sauna’s heat, contrast therapy, and natural treatments to promote mental presence and support the well-being of body, mind, and soul. Rooted in ancient Finnish treatment traditions, it leverages the proven health benefits of heat and sauna bathing.
At the core of the Terhen concept lies Terhi Ruutu’s book Sauna Therapy – Recipes for Well-being, which provides the foundation for the practices and wellness rituals offered.
